The Geological Survey Department (GSD) of Cyprus awarded this Project to a two-member Consortium, comprising ALA Planning Partnership and Atlantis Environment and Innovation Ltd. The aim of the GSD was to ensure that the district is self-sustained in terms of its needs for aggregate material for the next 25 years.
The scope of the Project included the preparation of the Plan and the associated Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the establishment of a potential quarry zone by evaluating alternative potential areas in the Larnaca District. The SEA study assessed the potential impacts of the proposed quarry zone on various aspects of the environment, such as air quality, water resources, flora and fauna, landscape, and cultural heritage. It also considered the potential impacts on local communities, such as noise and dust pollution, traffic, and employment opportunities.
The SEA also involved the carrying out of individual Appropriate Assessment Studies, for each of the selected areas, as they were located within, or in close proximity, to protected sites of the Natura 2000 network.
