The main goal of the Project was to update the existing Strategic Study for Sustainability Quarrying and Mining Development of Cyprus (2001-2025) aiming towards the development of a long-term integrated policy, which would cover the period 2021-2050. This will become the framework for a new government policy for the rational and sustainable development and management of strategic raw materials, which are important for the general development of Cyprus in the coming decades, while at the same time protecting the mineral and the natural wealth as well as the built and cultural environment of Cyprus.

The Contract was awarded, by the Geological Survey Department, following the procurement of a public Competition to the Consortium “ALA Planning Partnership Consultancy L.L.C.”, “Atlantis Environment and Innovation Ltd” and “Wardell Armstrong International”. ALA Planning Partnership Consultancy L.L.C. lead the Consortium as coordinators.

ALA was also responsible for the town planning aspects of the Strategy report, the construction of the geodatabase that will become GSD’s main database.

Apart from the preparation of the National Strategy for the Sustainable Quarrying and Mining Development of the country and the respective Strategic Environmental Assessment the deliverables of the Project also included the preparation of a baseline analysis report with mapping of environmental and other relevant information and data as well as an updated georeferenced mineral wealth database, which included geographic information system data and analysis.
