Presentation of the Strategic Road Safety Plan for the Republic of Cyprus for the period 2012-2020 to the Road Safety Council

The Strategic Road Safety Plan for the Republic of Cyprus for 2012-2020, was presented to the Road Safety Council by the consortium SKM Colin Buchanan, ALA Planning Partnership and Zavrides Consulting. The presentation took place during the meeting of the Road Safety Council on 10 July 2013, in the conference hall of the Road Safety Park. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Communications and Works, Mr. Tasos Mitsopoulos, the Minister of Justice and Public Order Mr. Ionas Nicholaou, the Chief of Police Mr. Michalis Papageorgiou, the Director of Traffic Mr. Demetris Demetriou. At the meeting were also present officers and representatives of all competent authorities involved in road safety.

Priority, as stated in the report, should be the immediate implementation of the short-term actions that are included in the Plan. Especially during the current economic crisis period, the focus of the relevant departments should be on measures and actions that are not costly (changes in legislation, organization of procedures, etc.) but will contribute to the targets of the Plan. Important is also the political and technical support to the Road Safety Unit so that the various authorities that are involved in road safety in Cyprus, are coordinated effectively.
